Roughlock Lodge Vacation Rental

About Us

Roughlock Lodge, Lead, SD

This cabin was built by a gentleman and his bride with a great vision. He used the trees of the property for the logs and hand-hewed each log himself. He did a beautiful job of incorporating the cliffs you see out the front windows for    breath-taking views. While working in the kitchen, you will see the best view of the cliffs.  It is love at first sight.

Keeping with and adding to the previous owner’s vision, a complete inside-and-out renovation took place. It took six months of hard work renovating the roofs, electrical, windows, etc. to make it what it is today. A large hot tub was added for your enjoyment.  A little bit of history are the small hand rails in the cabin.  The gentleman who built the cabin was able to acquire them from the teepees used in the movie, “Dances with Wolves.”  The end of the movie was filmed about two miles from the cabin.  Maximus,(Max for short) the mounted buffalo finishes out the lodge tradition. You can stand anywhere on this property to experience the most timeless and beautiful views of the canyon and while you’re looking watch overhead for the soaring bald and golden eagles in the area.  It is an amazing view.

Another work of the past owner is the water features he built throughout the property with the running springs that come from the mountain. In the spring, summer, and fall you will see off the deck the water wheel turning from the spring waters that flow all year round.  This flows into another little pond further down the hill. Another water feature follows a walking trail on the property.  When you open the windows and doors your ears will hear the rushing waters of Spearfish Creek. Leave the loft deck door open throughout the night to hear the calming sounds of the springs trickling throughout the property.

You will find this secluded hideaway a wonderful way to experience the quietness and beauty of Spearfish Canyon. Be sure to check out Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls all within two miles of Roughlock Lodge. There are awesome walking trails at both of these falls to take advantage of.

There are two taste-tempting restaurants in the area.  Latchstring Restaurant is less than a mile away and Cheyenne Crossing is just five miles away.  They both serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in the summer months.  Cheyenne Crossing is only open on Friday, Saturday, & Sundays in the winter months.  Latchstring is open year round.

There are many activities throughout the Black Hills to experience throughout your stay but remember where you will be able to come back to . . . to just relax and enjoy nature.   You may choose not to leave at all.  But what ever you desire you will find it here.

We hope you enjoy your stay at Roughlock Lodge.  Be sure to sign the guest book and leave your comments.  After experiencing your getaway in Spearfish Canyon please come back to visit and let your family and friends know about this little piece of heaven here in the beautiful Black Hills.
